The Manifold and Hamps Valley: 12 Miles Strenuous
Ilam-Manifold Valley-Calton-Hamps Valley Cycleway-Thors Cave-Wetton-Castern-Ilam
The walks starts at Ilam in Stafordshire and crosses parkland to reach the River Manifold. After crossing the Manifold below Musden Grange height is gained as the walk traverses the lower slopes of Musden Low.
Dropping down again into Calton before descending steeply into the Hamps Valley. The walk then follows the Hamps Valley Cycleway until it reaches the mighty Thors Cave. Here the walk crosses the dry river bed
and climbs the new path to the cave. As you reach the cave the view unfolds before you, from here you can also see the cave above Wetton Mill. (see Wetton & The Manifold Valley Walk). From Thors Cave
the walk then leads to Wetton and onto Wetton Low where it descends above Castern Woods to Castern and finally back to Ilam.
